5th six weeks:

Storyboards and commercial design

Part 1

a.  List ten commercial products you could not live without.

b.  List ten services provided by other people that you could not live without.

c.  Think of two things that you believe people in today's society really need or could use but that do not exist or have not been invented yet.

d.  Homework:  Watch 30 minutes-1 hour of television.  Write down approximately a one-half page description of two different commercials that you think are interesting or effective.  Answer the following things in your description:

        1.  What product or service is being marketed?

        2.  How did the commercial catch your attention?

        3.  Were there any elements of humor or surprise used?

        4.  Was the commercial effective in making you want to purchase the product or service being marketed?

        5.  What was different about the commercial?  What made it stand out from other commercials?

Part 2:

a.  Think of two ways that you could market one or both of the products you thought of for Part 1-c, in a commercial.

b.  Get with a partner, and between the two of you, decide on one of your products or services to design a commercial about.

c.  Refine your ideas together.

d.  Decide on a logo for your product or service.

e.  Draw out a layout of 10 screens, approximately 3x3 inches each with 2x2 inches squares below each for dialogue and action notes.  This will be your working storyboard--you should use a ruler.  It should look like this:

f.  In pencil, illustrate the events of your commercial in the ten screens, in sequential order, going from top to bottom and left to right.  This is only a working copy--do not spend much time on details.

        1.  Decide on characters for your commercial.

        2.  In the smaller boxes, include any specific actions occurring in the respective frame and any dialogue.

        3.  If someone will be speaking behind the camera, indicate that person's dialogue under narrator.

        4.  Keep in mind that you will be filming these commercials with your classmates as the actors and with limited special effects.

Part 3

a.  Get approval for your initial storyboard from the teacher.

b.  After you receive approval, make a neater and cleaner copy of your revised storyboard in color.  Take into consideration the following, because you will need to recreate this for filming.

        1.  What does your background look like?

        2.  How many actors do you have?  Consider the availability of your actors (the people in your class).

        3.  What kind of location does your commercial take place in?  (you will be able to film outdoors if you need to)

        4.  The complete air time should be no more than 3 minutes for the entire commercial.

Part 4

a.  After your storyboard is completed, cast your commercial from the people in the classroom.  Choose people who match the needs of your commercial!

b.  Write out a script for each of the actors who require scripts.

c.  Rehearse your commercial.

d.  Gather or make any props that you will need.

e.  Set up and film your commercial.
