Cubism

Objective:  To study the artistic style of Cubism as portrayed by artist Pablo Picasso.  To demonstrate simple cubistic design through the use of shading and geometric shapes.

Steps:

1.  Looks at samples of Cubism by Pablo Picasso.

        Examples of cubist works. http://www.artlex.com/ArtLex/c/cubism.html

2.  Draw a simple design on a piece of 12x18 drawing paper, covering most of the center portion of your paper.  Examples might include a flower, a mountain scene, a tree, etc.

3.  Draw intersecting lines all over your paper from one side to another, crossing over your image in the center.

4.  Choose at least two different colored crayons to use.  Complimentary colors work well with this project, but any two colors can be used.

5.  Using one color, color only one shape defined by the intersecting lines.  Shade the shape from dark to medium to light..

6.  Using the same color, color the adjoining shape in the opposite direction as you did the previous shape.  If you ended with a lighter shade, start with a dark shade, so that adjacent shapes that touch each other have dark and light sides touching.

7.  Continue this procedure throughout the entire composition.

8.  Use the other crayon on half of the paper or for only the original image or for alternating sections.
