Filtered Art
Objective: To examine the filtration of color through water. To be able to "see" images in random designs.
Steps:
1. Draw pictures or abstract designs on five different coffee filters, using markers.
2. Arrange the coffee filters upside down on a large sheet of drawing paper, approximately 15x20 inches.
3. Spray the coffee filters with water, just enough to dampen the filters.
4. Press each filter down with a dry cloth.
5. Lift the filters to expose the random designs created on the paper. Let dry.
6. Once the designs are dry, examine the designs from every direction, looking for pictures or images within them.
7. Use a pencil to outline the images you see, connecting them to form an illustration.
8. Use pastels, ink, oil pastels or crayons to outline the images. Apply color in the white spaces.
Examples:
9. Once you have accumulated several filters, glue them onto a piece of cardboard, overlapping them in such a way as to create a continuous design.
10. Use acrylic paint to outline an illustration within the composition of dried filters.
