Juxtaposition

Objective:  Students will demonstrate an understanding of the term "juxtaposition".  Students will analyze personal works to understand how juxtaposing images can change a composition to the point that it is original and creative.  Students will practice juxtaposing a variety of images to create original works of art.

Steps:

1.  Define juxtaposition.  (juxtaposition, juxtapose -The state or position of being placed close together or side by side, so as to permit comparison or contrast ; to place side by side <juxtapose unexpected combinations of colors, shapes and ideas)

2.  Find 3 different photographs or images from newspapers, the Internet or from magazines.  Think of ways in which you could combine these images as you are looking for them.  Think of unusual ways or ways that someone else might not think of.

3.  Once you have secured your three images, sketch out a layout of your composition, lightly, in pencil.

4.  Make sure your composition fills the page.

5.  Add color and detail, using pencils and colored pencils.
