Pictades

Objective:

1.The students will utilize critical thinking skills to form solutions to artistic problems involving the depiction of emotions and states of being, using the design element of lines.

2.The students will use their prior knowledge of the design element of LINE to illustrate various actions and feelings for the class.

3.Students will cooperatively analyze the problems presented to them by individual students.

Rationale:  This game-type exercise will enable the art students to recall their prior knowledge of the use of LINE as an element of art and apply it to the illustration of common, everyday actions, emotions and states of being.  This exercise will also help to build peer relationships between the students who are unfamiliar with each other.  This exercise will help the students to learn how to work together in groups.

Procedure:

  1. Divide students into two groups.
  2. Each group will designate a person to begin.
  3. The first person, the designated “Illustrator”, will draw a slip of paper from one of three baskets.
  4. The Illustrator has 1 minute to draw the word or phrase that is on the paper.  He or she must draw their illustration, using one continuous line.
  5. The Illustrator cannot say anything to the other students or give any clues as to what is on the slip of paper.  He or she can only motion to the group how many words is in their phrase.
  6. The Illustrator’s group members have until the one minute is up to guess what the word or phrase is by watching the Illustrator’s motions during drawing and the drawing itself.
  7. If the group guesses correctly, they get the corresponding number of points for their team, according to which basket the word or phrase was chosen from.
  8. Basket 1 should contain simple words and phrases, worth 1 point; basket 2 should contain words and phrases of medium difficulty worth 2 points; basket 3 should contain difficult words and phrases worth 3 points.
  9. If the guessing group is unable to solve the problem, the second group is given one chance to solve it before the next Illustrator begins a new problem.
