Playing Cards

Objective:  To utilize the Design principles of Repetition, Variety and Unity to create a 52 card deck of novelty playing cards.

Steps:

1.  Cut off a piece of 2x3 foot craft paper.

2.  Using a ruler, draw 52- 2x3 inch squares--four rows of thirteen each.

3.  In two of the opposite corners on each card, draw one of the thirteen symbols--A, K, Q, J, and 10-2.

4.  Under each number/letter, draw one of the four symbols--a heart, a club, a diamond, or a spade.  You should end up with one symbol under each of four A, K, Q, etc.

5.  Think of a theme that consists of 52 related variations.  For example, hairstyles, sports equipment, flowers, etc.

6.  On each card, draw a different illustration that represents the theme you chose.  For example, 52 different hairstyles, 52 different flowers, etc.

7.  Color each number/letter and symbol in black or red, and then color each illustration however you wish.

8.  Outline each card in black ink.
