Pop Art
Objective: Students will research the progression of Pop Art from its beginnings in the 40's to modern times. Students will examine the work of Pop artists like Andy Warhol and Roy Lichtenstein. Students will demonstrate their own artistic talents in developing a composition in the style of Andy Warhol, using bright, flat colors. Students will demonstrate an understanding of the role of Pop Art in today's cultures.
Steps:
1. Using the library, the internet, and provided resources, research examples of Pop Art over the past 60 years. Find the commonalities in the various works. What do you see as the prominent characteristics of these works?
2. Choose one of the following activities to complete:
Class assignment: Draw a composition of the still life, which has been set up in the classroom. Make sure you fill the entire sheet of 12x18 paper. Fill in all of the spaces with solid colors, using markers, paint or crayons. Make sure every spot of the composition is filled in. Use only primary and secondary colors.
Extra assignment: By looking in the mirror, draw a portrait of yourself, from the shoulders up. Divide your portrait into sections that are defined by the boundaries within the portrait. Add solid colors to the sections, using markers or crayons. Use only primary and secondary colors.
Computer assignment: Locate a photographic portrait of someone on the Internet, from the shoulders up. Save the photograph in a folder on your computer. Open the photo in a paint program like MS Paint, Adobe PhotoShop, or Paint Shop Pro 7. Use the fill tool to fill in sections of the photo with solid colors. Use only the primary and secondary colors.
3. Compare your finished piece to samples of work by Andy Warhol. http://www.artchive.com/artchive/ftptoc/warhol_ext.html
