Objective: To learn the difference between positive and negative space within a composition. To utilize the positive and negative space effectively. To create compositions that unite the positive and negative space.
Steps:
1. Fold an 8x12 sheet of paper into four equal sections.
2. Cut irregular shapes out of the sides and corners of the folded paper.
3. Unfold the paper to reveal an abstracted shape.
4. Trace your shape onto a 12x18 sheet of drawing paper.
5. Draw a scene inside of the shape you have just drawn--this is the positive space. Include at least five different textures in your picture.
6. Draw a different scene or pattern in the background--this is the negative space.
7. Color the contrasting scenes.
