1st Six Weeks--Sequencing

30 50 minute class periods

Day:     Activity:

Week 1

1.  Introduction--Hand out materials        Thought questions:  What is Art?  List art-related careers.    What do I want to learn in this class?

2.  Pictades game

3.  Group Illustration game

4.  COLOR--Introduce primary colors, secondary colors, intermediate colors--memorize for pop quiz.    Design an original color wheel, using tempera paint.

5.  Add a landscape illustration to color wheel design, juxtaposing the two together.  Finish as HW.  Use crayon or colored pencil.--Journal 1 due--4 detailed studies + 1 study of a landscape scene

Week 2

6.  Career #1:  Travel Agency--Create a brochure about an exotic locale, using the color wheel design.  Finish as HW.

7.  Color Schemes/Mixing colors--Create a chart demonstrating the various color groups and mixing of colors, using only red, blue, yellow, black and white.  Include the following:  mixing primary colors to get brown; mixing secondary colors to get brown--all sets of complementary colors; mixing complementary colors to get brown--2 examples of analogous colors; examples of cool colors; examples of warm colors; 2 examples of split-complementary color schemes; neutral colors--memorize color groups for pop quiz.

8.  VALUE:  Value charts--showing three tints and three shades of primary, secondary, and intermediate colors.

9.  Artist #1--Georgia O'Keefe--Enlarged flowers, showing color value changes.  Finish as HW.

10.  Career #2:  Florist--Create a floral composition, using one specific color scheme and showing value changes.-- Journal 2 due--4 detailed studies + 1 study of 3 different flowers            HOMEWORK:  Written account of 2 dreams.

 

Week 3

11.  Artist #2--Claude Monet--Impressionism--Drawing from Dreams and Nightmares in different color values.

12.  Career #3:  Dream Analysis--portraying and analyzing emotions through the use of color.  Finish Dream illustrations.

13.  Artist #3--Pablo Picasso--Cubism--Cubism piece, using two colors in different values.

14.  Finish Cubism piece.  Finish as HW.

15.  Trees--Drawing trees, using values of neutral colors--outside. --Journal 3 due--4 detailed studies + 1 study of something that provokes a feeling of fear

Week 4

16.  Seasonal colors--adding trees to landscape pictures--four scenes depicting varying colors of the seasons.

17.  Finish Seasonal scenes.  Finish as HW.

18.  Career #4--Illustrating children's books--Use seasonal pictures, trees in juxtaposition with other things to create a 6-8 page children's book with original story.

19.  Finish children's book.  Finish as HW.

20.  Filtered art--Using markers, draw designs on coffee filters and spray with water onto drawing paper--let dry overnight. -- Journal 4 due-- 4 studies of anything + 1 study of children's toys.

Week 5

21.  Add illustrations to filtered designs, using pastels or colored pencils--look for designs in the different color values.  Finish as Homework.

22.  Shading techniques to create value and shadows.

23.  Artist #4--Georges Seurat--Post-Impressionism--Pointillism project--using colored dots to create value changes--done in crayon, pastel or colored pencil.

24.  Finish Pointillism project.  Finish a HW.

25.  Artist #5--Roy Lichtenstein--Pop Art--Career #5--Comic strips--Enlarge 1 frame from a comic strip in style of Lichtenstein, using ink.

Week 6

26.  Finish comic strips.  Finish as HW.  --Journal 5 due--4 studies of anything + 1 study of a comic book character.

27.  Artist #6--Andy Warhol--Pop Art--Still Life in solid-area, defined color schemes.  Finish as HW.

28.  Career #6--Product Labels--using Warhol's Campbell's soup label, design your own food label.  Finish as HW.

29.  Makeup work
